“It is more blessed to give than receive.” — Jesus Christ When I was a child, I memorized the “It’s more blessed to give...” scripture. My reaction to it? I thought about all the great Christmas and birthday gifts I loved getting and thought, “yeah right!” and went on my merry self absorbed way.
Being self oriented as a child seems natural and necessary. As we mature, hopefully our guardians teach us to be conscious of others and their needs. If we fail to learn this lesson, our self-absorption degrades into a black hole, sucking dry all our joy and happiness.
As we pursue our life’s dreams and strive to reach our highest potential, we fall short if we have not developed our consciousness to include others and their well being. We have not come to realize the supreme importance of our connection to others. We therefore cannot receive a fuller blessing which allows us to connect with the highest source of power.
At one point during my adulthood — perhaps a little later than I would care to admit — I finally got the blessing message, which is as vital today as it was 2000 years ago.
When I take the time to extend myself, make a phone call, write a note, send an ecard, give a gift, listen to a friend, reach out beyond myself, I am the one who is blessed. When I act on this level, I can feel a deep kind of self esteem and self respect that I never get from just caring for myself. It’s a special kind of satisfaction that feels like radiance and love.
Remember, it’s never too late to learn this lesson.
Here’s a refresher course, expressing these ideas in a video from YouTube.
