The End of Time?

Most of us think of time as something we measure from sun up to sundown. It’s on our wrist, digitized and computerized, signaling seconds, minutes, hours, am, pm and alarming us that we need to rush off to our next appointment. It’s a force that controls our life.

Yet according to Einstein, time and space are interconnected. That means time is not an entity.  In fact, our whole concept of time may be an illusion.

We are at the end of time, so to speak.

In “The End of Time: The Next Revolution in Physics" by Julian Barbour, the physicist writer concludes that time is not time at all but change. Instead of measuring time, we are actually measuring change.

"...unification of general relavitivty and quantum physics may well spell the end of time. By this, I mean it it will cease to have a role in the foundation of physics. We shall come to see that time does not exist,” says Barbour.

So what is the forward movement in each moment that we experience that we call time?

According to Barbour, time is like frames in a movie. We in this nano second are in one frame and then there’s a slight shift or change and we are literally copied over to the second frame. (Oops ... there are no nano seconds!)

That means that the person you were this morning is no longer and the person you are this moment will be no longer in the next frame. Yet all the yous in the all the frames know about each other. It’s similar to being in your own movie frame to frame.

Perhaps that’s why when people have near death experiences they say they see their life run as a movie before their eyes.

At any rate, knowing that time is change rather than a wrist watch could prove useful when considering how you want to live your life. You might find it more useful to ask yourself, “Since I know, life is about change, how then can I change to be the kind of person I want to be.”

Accepting change as a reality, as something we cannot hold on to, makes us more respectful of every moment we live, propels us further into living in the now and demands that we focus ourselves properly so that all the shifts and changes we make are productive ones.
