Your success in business, your ability to connect with others, your expertise at expressing yourself are all connected to your vocabulary level.
Websters defines a person's vocabulary as "All the words used, recognized and understood by a particular person."
Educators define four groups: 1) Reading 2) Listening 3) Speaking 4) Writing.
Our reading vocabulary is largest. We recognize words and get their meaning in context.
Listening is similar but we may not catch the drift without the visuals.
Our speaking vocabulary is much smaller. Our writing vocabulary is dwindled down unless we work at it.
Vocabulary and Relationships
With our personal and business relationships, our speaking vocabulary decides how well we can tell others:
- How we feel
- What's bothering us
- Our opinions
- What excites us
- What we're angry about::
-
What we think needs doing
- What we believe is happening.
How educated and well read our parents were, how they interacted in the family and the amount of time we spent with them establishes our vocabulary capabilities and builds our skills at talking with others.
Vocabulary and Success in Life
It has been shown again and again that business professionals with large vocabularies increase their income and get promoted over people with lower vocabulary levels.
A study by Johnson O’Conner Research laboratory demonstrated that word knowledge levels matched ranks on the corporate ladder. Look at the results of the business English test given to employees at 39 Manufacturing Companies:
